Your Driving Licence - Check Your Details Online

Check and share your driving license details

Those of us who’ve been driving for a while will remember the days when a driving license was a large folded piece of green/pink paper which showed all the details of your driving entitlements and endorsements. If you wanted to hire a car or van, you’d often be asked to show this so that the hire firm could keep a copy for their records. Later came the photocard license, which while showing the details of the driver, what they can drive and usually the worst picture ever taken of them, there isn’t enough space to show their full driving record. The paper part of the driving licence was abolished in 2015, so where can you find the details that used to be shown there?

To check details of your own driving license and driving record, you’re now able to see your full profile online simply by entering your driving license number and your National Insurance number into the Governments website.

What could you use your driving licence information for?

Being able to access your own driving licence information online might be something you do simply out of curiosity, but there are several reasons why you might look up your own details.

  • Check the types of vehicles you’re allowed to drive on your driving licence
  • Check that your personal details are up to date
  • Look up how many penalty points you have on your license to see if they’ve expired
  • Create a code to share this information with someone else
  • Print out a copy of your information to keep or to show to someone else

Why would you share your licence information with someone else

There are a number of reasons why you might choose to share your driving license information with others. You might need to prove your entitlement to drive vehicles of a particular class before driving/hiring one for example. Alternatively, you might need to prove you have a clean driving licence and are not disqualified before being employed in a job that involves driving. To share your information you can simply print it out, alternatively, you can use the same check system to generate a code which you can share with anyone and they can use it to access your information for up to 21 days.
