Car Hire Insurance and Van Hire Insurance

Van and Car Hire Insurance Provided By Priory

As part of the service we provide, we include suitable insurance with all our vehicle hires. We want you to get behind the wheel and get out on the open road in search of adventure as soon as possible, but, unfortunately, there are one or two formalities to cover first.

It’s a legal requirement that all motor vehicles in use on the road are covered by adequate insurance. As part of the hiring process, we’ll ask you to sign to agree to various terms and conditions. We do however try to keep all this information as brief and easy to digest as possible. We understand that you’re keen to sign the form and get out on the road, but please take a few minutes to read through all the terms and conditions along with the details of the van or car hire insurance to make sure you’re familiar with what you’re agreeing to. This also gives you chance to clarify anything you need to before you set off rather than later should you be unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident.

Collision damage waiver for Van and Car Hire Insurance

As an optional extra to the standard van and car hire insurance, hirers can choose to pay extra for a collision damage waiver. The waiver if chosen, means that if the worst happens, Priory will cover 50% of the damage cost which would otherwise be entirely the responsibility of the hirer. It’s worth pointing out that not everything

Can I Arrange my own insurance?

We feel that the policies we include with our car and van hire represent the absolute best balance between price and convenience and almost all our customers are pleased to be able to arrange all the formalities of vehicle hire in one go. We do however allow our customers to arrange their own van or car hire insurance.

If you’d like to arrange your own cover, please let us know and be aware that, for your sake and ours, we’ll need sufficient documentation to satisfy ourselves that the cover is at least equivalent to the policy we’d otherwise offer as standard. We do our best to be fair and open, but, as we’re sure you’ll understand, we do reserve the right to accept or decline a policy as suitable. Please feel free to contact us about what will need to be included in an externally sourced policy and we’ll happily give you the details you’ll need.

What if I’m involved in a collision?

If you’re unfortunate enough to be involved in a collision while responsible for a Priory vehicle, for the purposes of your van and car hire insurance, remember not to accept responsibility for the incident. You may be pressured to take responsibility, you may feel responsible, you may even be responsible, but ultimately it’s the job of the authorities and the insurance companies to ascertain fault and you may unwittingly jeopardise your own cover by accepting blame. If pressured to admit fault, whether in a Priory vehicle or your own, it’s always best to say “Let’s leave it to the insurance companies to decide”. This may also avoid an argument in what may well be a tense situation.

  • Make sure that the vehicle has been left safe and secure.
  • If anyone is injured or if there is a disagreement over who is responsible make sure you contact the Police straight away.
  • Once the Police have been advised, call us next. There’s an address on page 1 of the Rental agreement, please fill out the accident form and post it to the address shown.  In the case of theft, tell us as soon as possible and follow this up with a written notice as soon as is practicable.
  • The hirer and/or named drivers should collect the names and addresses of any witnesses and send those to us.
  • If there are any letters, notices or any other pictures or evidence relating to the incident, theft or loss, please send these to us as soon as you can.
  • Give us and our insurers the best chance by being as cooperative as possible and where appropriate allowing us to defend you.
  • In the case of theft or loss, make sure you return any keys you may still have and report the theft or loss to the Police at the earliest opportunity.

We hope none of this applies to you!

By and large, we’re fortunate that our customers are as careful with their hired vehicles as they are with their own, however, we understand that accidents happen so be assured that if you find yourself filling out an incident form, we’ll treat you with sympathy and understanding – we’re people too!

With each policy being arranged as being the most suitable for the drivers and vehicles at the time of hiring and with various terms and conditions having the potential to change over time, please take care to read the specifics provided in your hire agreement as the information provided above is general in nature and while correct at the time of writing may not be relevant to you and your hire. If you have any questions, we’d be only too happy to discuss these with you, feel free to get in touch and ask away.
